The Barcelona striker was deeply affected by recent criticism that centred on his form, attitude and desire while playing for Argentina in their fraught World Cup qualifying campaign. A subsequent lacklustre display for Barca against Valencia, where they failed to win for the first time this year, saw more criticism - this time from the Spanish press.
However, Messi answered his critics last weekend as he helped the Catalan side thrash Real Zaragoza 6-1. Speaking on the Barcelona website Messi commented "I did not have the happiest of times with the national team, nor in the Valencia game, but I always knew I'd bounce back.
"The most important thing is my team-mates - they showed total confidence in me, which makes me feel more comfortable. "Pep [Guardiola] too. It's important how he makes you feel, both on and off the pitch. He takes particular interest in you as a human being, not just as a player."
