Walking

Walking is the main form of animal locomotion apart from running and crawling. Running and walking are different from each other. For a human child the ability to walk independently is achieved around the age of 11 months. For humans walking is the main form of transportation apart from vehicles. Although walking speeds can vary greatly depending on the factors such as height, weight, age, terrain, surface, load, culture and fitness, the average walking speed of human is 3 miles per hour.
Regular walking sessions for a minimum period of 30 to 60 minutes, daily with a correct walking posture reduces health risks and has various health benefits. It helps to reduce the chances of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression. Walking also increases the life expectancy of people suffering from obesity and high blood pressure. It also increases bone health, strengthening the hip bones and lowering the harmful cholesterol. Most people walk for hobby and in the post-industrial age it is often enjoyed as one of the best form of exercise.
Though the new inventions of various vehicles have made our transport easier it is necessary for us to walk regularly in order maintain proper health and fitness. So it is better if we allot some time for walking daily. So walk long and live long…!!!

Laser Applications

The word laser originated as an acronym from the word “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. A laser is a device that emits light through a process called stimulated emission. Laser light usually produces coherent beam which is the most characteristic feature of laser. It is generally monochromatic in nature. With its coherency, high monochromaticity and ability to reach extremely high powers, in the recent past laser light has become more important and has gained many applications in various fields.
There are many scientific, military, medical and industrial applications of laser. In science lasers are used in many ways including: a wide variety of interferometric techniques, spectroscopy, remote sensing, non linear optics, holography techniques, geology seismology, and atmospheric physics. In astronomy lasers have also been used to create artificial laser guide stars, used as reference objects for adaptive optics telescopes.
In military it is used in applications such as target designation and ranging, defensive counter measures, communication and directed energy weapons.
In medical laser has found wide applications in cosmetic surgery which involves the removal of tattoos, scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, birth marks and hair, in eye and refractive surgery, soft tissue surgery, laser scalpel, in dentistry for caries removal, tooth whitening and oral surgery. It is also used to remove tumors by ‘no touch’ method.
In industries laser is used in cutting and welding of metals, digital minilabs, engraving, bonding, bubble grams, photo lithography, optical communication, space elevator, 3D laser scanners, laser printers, diode lasers and many other applications.
Like all other new development laser has its own advantage and disadvantages. It is important that we realize its applications and utilize it in a proper way.

Take life as it comes

Every human has got their own problems at every stage of their life. It is in individual’s hand to come out of it and lead a peaceful life. People keep on pondering over problems and complicate things which finally end up in stress. This will no longer leave us in peace! The best way to handle such situation is to accept and deal things as they occur. It is not solely being tolerant and compromising. It is more of accepting the reality that comes our way. It doesn't mean you take it gracefully all the time, it just means you do not worry and stress big time over things. So without any expectations, take life as it comes and lead a happy life.

Olympics 2012

The 2012 summer Olympic games also called the Games of the XXX Olympiad are due to be held in London, United Kingdom from 27th July to 12th August 2012. London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times having done so in 1908 and 1948.
The 2012 Olympics and Para-Olympics will be using a mixture of new venues with historic and temporary facilities like Hyde Park and Horse Guards Parade which are well known. As per the organizers intention there will be no white elephants after the games and instead of that a “2012 legacy” will be delivered. The plans include a part of the regeneration of Stratford in East London which will be the site of the Olympic park and of the neighboring Lower Lea Valley.
This Olympic programme features 26 sports and a total of 39 disciplines. The 2012 Paralympics Games programme has 20 sports and 21 disciplines. Baseball and softball were not accepted by the IOC. IOC is considering the addition of golf and sevens rugby for the 2016 games.
On 27th July 2009, UK celebrated 3 years to go until the opening ceremony. The Javelin train which will be used for the transport of spectators to the Olympic park was trialed for athletes. Athletes and media, as well as Mayor of London Boris Johnson were given a tour of the Olympic park. The flag was raised outside City Hall on 26th September 2008 to celebrate the start of the Olympiad. The flag will continue to fly outside City Hall until the day of the Olympic opening ceremony.
People of all generation from all countries are eagerly awaiting the Olympics and Paralympics 2012 at London. But unfortunately there are 1053 days to wait for the opening ceremony of the games. Greater the time greater is the expectations. So let’s wait and get the best of our expectations fulfilled…!!

Swine Flu causes

Classical swine fever otherwise known as hog cholera or pig plague is a highly contagious disease that comes from pigs and wild boars. It is caused by pestivirus belonging to family flaviviridae. Swine fever causes fever, skin lesions particularly in young animals and fatality within 15 days. The disease is much endemic in Asia, Central and South America, parts of Europe and Africa. The main symptom of this infection in pigs is the pin point hemorrhages on the kidneys.
The infectious virus is otherwise known as ‘CSFV’ and its structure closely resembles border disease virus. Infected piglets that are born from infected but sub clinical sows helps to maintain the disease within a population and spread it further. The incubation period of the ‘CSFV’ ranges from 2 to 14 days but the symptoms are not prominent up to two to four weeks. As the virus causes acute respiratory problems it can spread easily through polluted air. Hence it is known as “Swine Flu”.
Usually swine flu rarely affects human but this time the out break is not only due to the swine influenza virus but also due to new influenza A virus sub type H1N1 which is a derivative of swine influenza virus. According to the WHO reports it passes with ease from one person to another, ability to an unidentified mutation. In 1957 an Asian flu pandemic infected 45 million Americans and killed 70000 of them. It caused about two million deaths globally. Now once again the cycle has turned back in 2009. Thus making evident, the out break of swine flu and making plans for a global pandemic.

Swine Flu Symptoms

Swine flu has threatened people of various countries in the recent past to a great extent.
Though the name Swine flu brings additional fear among people, it is necessary to remember that it is just an infection caused by a virus H1N1. It is another type of flu and the symptoms are similar to the typical flu symptoms. The difference is that the current swine influenza virus has components of pig and bird influenza viruses to which humans are not immune. Hence it was likely to cause a global out break and spread easily from person to person.
Like seasonal flu, symptoms of swine flu include fever which is usually high but sometimes absent, cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chill, fatigue or tiredness and sometimes even diarrhea and vomiting. More serious swine flu infection may include symptoms of pneumonia and respiratory failure. More serious symptoms which indicate immediate medical treatment are fast or trouble breathing, not drinking enough fluids, blue or gray color skin, not waking up or not interacting, severe or continuous vomiting.
People who are thought to be at high risk and are easily affected by swine flu are pregnant women, people with chronic medical problems such as chronic lung disease like asthma, diabetes and immune suppression, and adults and children with obesity. It is necessary to keep in mind that most children with cough or runny nose do not have symptoms of swine flu. It is just the symptoms of typical flu. So there is no need to panic. When you find people with the above mentioned symptoms consult a doctor and get the proper treatment.

Ozone DepletionOzone Depletion

The stratosphere is present thirty miles above the earth and it consists of the ozone at the top. The ozone protects the earth from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Ozone is a bluish gas that is formed by three atoms of oxygen. In the recent years the ozone layer has been depleted.
The main reason for this is the production and emission of CFCs, chlorofluorocarbons. Antarctica was an early victim to ozone depletion. A massive hole in the ozone right above Antarctica not only threatens the continent but many others due to the melting ice caps.
Even minor problems of ozone depletion have major effects. When a small amount of ozone layer is lost a large amount of ultra violet rays from the sun enter the earth’s surface. Major effect of ozone depletion is that it can cause skin cancer. In addition to cancer some researches say that ozone depletion may even lead to increased rate of malaria and other infectious diseases. The environment will have negative effects; life cycles of plants will change disturbing the entire ecosystem. Oceans will be hit hard. There will be even changes in the planet’s climatic conditions throughout the world.
It is important that we take some measures to ensure that the ozone layer is not depleted further. Since the use of CFCs is wide spread and is almost used in all fields it is difficult to ban the use of CFCs. Moreover the CFCs already present in the atmosphere will remain there for almost 100 years. So it is necessary to reduce the use of CFCs and preventing them from accumulating more in the atmosphere.

Swimming Tips

• In the beginning you should not over attempt in terms of speed and pace. Maintain a slow and comfortable pace.
• As a beginner swim three to four times a week, for a few minutes at a stretch.
• While swimming keep your head tilted at a level such that the water touches only the hair line.
• In order to maintain high energy level for long duration try not to kick hard the water.
• Keep a constant track of your heart rate to ensure that you are not over stressing yourself.
• Remember to stretch your body well for each and every stroke.
• For toning your legs, hips, belly do some kick board kicks.
• To enhance your breathing skills its better to hop up and down in water.
• Switch over to low intensity strokes like side stroke or breaststroke when you are feeling tired and fatigue.
• Choose crawl or freestyle when you are looking for a high intensity swimming stroke.
• Practice breathing exercise in between workouts.
• When doing a stroke, extend your arm in front as much as possible and clasp a hand full of water and pull back.
• Rolling with each stroke is important.
